How to Draw on Any Screen in Windows 11

Snowfairy AI OS Pen drawing tools and horizontal toolbar on a Windows desktop canvas

Windows 11 does not provide one universal drawing layer for every desktop app. OS Pen adds a floating toolbar above your current screen, so you can mark a browser page, presentation, document, video call or desktop without importing that content into a separate editor.

Draw over any appKeep the application you are explaining visible while the annotation layer stays available above it.
Switch tools quicklyMove between Pen, Highlighter, Eraser, shapes, Text and Cursor from the horizontal or compact vertical toolbar.
Guide attentionUse Laser Pointer, Spotlight, Curtain and Cursor FX when a permanent mark is unnecessary.
Capture the resultTake a screenshot, edit the captured region, copy it to the clipboard or export supported output formats.

Start drawing on your Windows 11 screen

  1. Install OS Pen from the official OS Pen download page and open it.
  2. Sign in to your Snowfairy AI account and activate an eligible trial or license when prompted.
  3. Open the app, browser, slide or document that you want to explain.
  4. Choose Pen or Highlighter from the floating toolbar, then select a colour and brush size.
  5. Draw directly over the visible screen. Switch to Cursor when you need to interact with the application underneath.
  6. Use Eraser, Undo, Clear or selection tools to correct the annotation without closing the underlying app.
Cursor mode matters
The annotation layer receives pointer input while a drawing tool is active. Switch back to Cursor when you need to click links, change slides, scroll a document or control the underlying application.

Choose the right tool for the explanation

Pen and Highlighter

Use Pen for handwriting, arrows and compact notes. Highlighter is better for emphasizing existing text while keeping the content beneath it readable. Adjust the brush size before writing when the audience is viewing a shared screen or projector.

Lines, arrows and shapes

Straight lines, arrows, rectangles, ellipses and polygons make diagrams easier to read than freehand marks. Use selection and duplicate tools when the same visual element needs to be repositioned or repeated.

Text, rulers and precision tools

Text is useful for labels that must remain legible. Ruler, protractor, compass and coordinate tools support measured diagrams and classroom walkthroughs where alignment or angles matter.

Draw while presenting without losing control

  • Use the horizontal toolbar when screen width is available and you want more tools visible at once.
  • Use the vertical toolbar when you want a compact strip close to the edge of the display.
  • Use Spotlight or Curtain to reveal information gradually instead of covering the screen with ink.
  • Use Step markers or Timer to structure a walkthrough.
  • Save or export important results before clearing a working canvas.

Common problems and practical fixes

The app underneath does not respond

Switch to Cursor mode before clicking or scrolling the underlying window. A drawing tool must capture pointer input so it can create the annotation.

Handwriting looks too thick on a shared screen

Reduce the brush size and test one short stroke at the viewing scale. A line that looks balanced on a laptop may appear much heavier on a projector or enlarged video feed.

Annotations are no longer needed

Erase individual marks, undo recent actions or clear the canvas. Capture anything you need to retain before clearing it.

Where screen drawing is useful

Live screen annotation is useful for online teaching, software demonstrations, design feedback, technical support, sales walkthroughs and recorded tutorials. The main benefit is context: the audience sees the mark beside the exact interface, diagram or sentence being discussed.
